This is a Pakhawaj that uses metals hooks instead of the traditional rawhide strap to attach the heads. This makes tuning and changing the heads much easier.

Also these drums have a gob already on the inside of the bass head, unlike the strapped pakhawaj which requires you to make a wheat paste gob each time you play.

These drums are very popular in ashrams and are often called "Mridangam" (not to be confused with the Carnatic Mridang). They are made of seasoned and durable wood.

Comes with a carrying bag.

This price includes a $15 packing fee.

Actual arrival of my drum makes up for a lot

    Reviewed on Jul 21, 2025

To amend my earlier review of 2025/6/30, today my pakhawaj arrived, only five days after I received word that it had been shipped. It was packed very well and arrived safely. The heads play well, loud enough and with good tone. As a bonus, the small wrench included fits not only the 10mm tuning bolts, but also the 11mm bolts on my older pakhawaj. I still hold back one star because in this electronic age, I expected better communication from Musician's Mall about the exact status of my order while it was "awaiting fulfillment," but am nevertheless now quite satisfied with my order and will definitely inform another pakhawaj (mridangam) player I just met two days ago who has no drum of his own that he can get a good one from Musician's Mall.

    Mostly really nice.

The high side sounds beautiful! Excellent resonance. The low side has a rattle because the hide has a slight warp in it. I'm going to try to adjust to get that out. If if comes out the drum will be perfect. Its very well made and heavy. The high end produces a range of sounds just as it should. I'm being picky here, but there is a green plastic decal band that goes around the middle of the drum that slightly cheapens the look of the drum. Wish that had been left off. I'm pretty happy with it though and would shop with musicians mall again.

Musicians Mall was both curtious and professional. My new Mridangman is beautiful and plays great!

    Perfect for temple use

I donated this pakhawaj to my temple. I see it being played and the musician praised the purchase. I had no idea about the sound quality.

    FANTASTIC PAKHAWAJ/MRIDANGAM!

We had such a good experience buying this drum through Musician’s Mall. There were 3 drums to choose from, and the owner very kindly allowed us to Skype with him, so we could see and hear each drum. The drum had to ship to Los Angeles. It arrived within a couple of days, in perfect condition with soft case, head covers, wrench, and packed carefully so nothing was broken. The drum is resonant and beautiful. And the price was very reasonable. Thank you, Musician’s Mall! We will be back soon to buy a harmonium :) From Shelly W.
