The string instruments that sit outside the sitar and sarod families: santoor, both the Kashmiri instrument and the Paloma concert model; swarmandal; Saraswati veena, jointed and single-piece Ekandam from Thanjavur; bulbul tarang, the keyed instrument sometimes called the Indian banjo, from Paloma and S.N. Kedar; the Kashmiri rabab; and a box tanpura.
