Hiren Roy Travel Sitar
Hiren Roy
This is a beautiful travel sitar made for us by Barun Roy. Unlike other travel sitars whose main resonating chambers are wood, like a guitar, this one is made from a gourd that is cut off and backed with a piece of wood. As a result this instrument is light and has a very nice acoustic sound, sweet and almost as loud as a the sound of full size sitar.
The total length of the sitar is 44 inches. It comes with a form fitting fiberglass case. For an extra fee we can "electrify" this sitar with pickups embedded in the main and sympathetic bridges.
This price includes a $25 packing fee.

As Good As A Full Size Sitar
Reviewed on Aug 20, 2015
I owned this sitar for a few years. It is quite compact but has the feel and sound of a first rate full size sitar. The lower tumba is still a gourd but has been cut back in depth. I feel this contributes to the outstanding acoustic sound. Mine was also equipped with a pickup and through an amp it was superb. Being a more traditional player, I was initially leery of the guitar style tuners, but they proved to be extremely stable and an asset in keeping the sitar in tune. Aside from being lighter, it felt like I was playing a full sized sitar when it came to action, neck width etc. The string length is a little shorter than a standard sitar (about 5/8"), which allows it to easily be tuned to both C# and D while maintaining a great sound at either pitch.

Well designed instrument

I have been playing the sitar for almost 30 years now. I play with various musicians and travel a lot. I decided to buy this sitar after I tried one at a store when I was in India. Even though the gourd is smaller in size it sounds just as good. I advise only serious people to buy it since it is an expensive instrument.
