Kanai Lal & Sons Sitar #1
Kanai Lal
This is a fully decorated Karaj/Pancham (Ravi Shankar style) sitar with 13 inlaid taraf (sympathetic) pegs, 7 lotus style main pegs, monochrome penwork and wood mount upper tumba. The bridges and fittings are synthetic, as are most sitars nowadays. Each taraf string has a unique bridge design. This instrument has a very nice tone and smooth action. This Kolkata shop provides instruments of consistent and durable quality. We have been getting sitars from them for the last 20 years, and are very pleased with them.
Included with any sitar purchase are a padded vinyl gig bag, an extra complete set of strings and 5 mizrabs: a $115 value.
This price includes a $25 packing fee.

Excellent instrument, couldn't be happier with the quality

I've only played practice, low-end version sitars so far, so my experience is a bit skewed. But in terms of sound quality and resonance across all notes, nothing I've played before can compare . Mine has a more open jawari (bridge), but that's exactly what I need. Came with double toomba and fiberglass case and pre-wired with pickup, and I have to say, for a delicate instrument, they put a LOT of work into packing it so that it would be as pristine as if I had picked it from the store. Came with extra mizrabs, even replacement strings. Only took 10 minutes to get all 20 strings re-tuned back into their proper key of D, and before long, this sitar was singing away.

Professional Sitar

I didn't have the money to spend on a Hiren Roy or a Rikhi Ram. The store recommended me to buy the Kanai Lal one. I'm surprised with the quality of this sitar. It sounds really good. Now I would like to try a Hiren Roy or Rikhi Ram to see the actual difference between the two. I didn't expect to receive such a nice sitar.
