Most are small family workshops — in Kolkata, Mumbai, Miraj and Delhi — where the work has passed down several generations: Kanai Lal & Sons and Hiren Roy for sitars, Naba Kanji for sarods, Haridas Vhatkar, Somnath Kakade and Mukta Das for tabla, Paul & Co. and Bina for harmoniums, and Jeff Whittier in California for bansuri.
Each page below says who the maker is and what their instruments are known for. We have bought directly from most of them for decades.
